COURSE OUTLINE AND INTRODUCTION
The course will equip students with knowledge of the principles of wildlife and protected Area management, the challenges faced and new approaches to participatory Protected Area planning and management.
The students will be able to understand different protected Area Systems in East Africa, have the knowledge of Protected Area Management, understand the challenges and provide new management paradigms applied in Protected Area Management.
The weekly course plan will include the following:
Lecturing /Group work, teaching /discussion, tests and presentations.
Exams will be at the end of the Semester.
• Need to protect landscapes and their features
• Need to understand different problems in different protected areas
• Major problems are man-made
• Conflict in use of land and resources
• Solutions to these conflicts
• Needs of people, animals and plants
• Problems such as population increase, demand for land, sharing of resources, modernisation, discovery of minerals etc.
• Designing protected areas as large units or as small units
• Major focus on current protected areas due to the great need of land elsewhere for human use
• Need for private protected areas
• International and local efforts in advocating for protection of areas of international recognition e.g. world heritage areas/sites,
• Costs and benefits of international efforts e.g. IUCN and WCS in conservation of areas of international recognition.

There is need to plan for protected areas like any other land use. Principles and steps of land use planning must be followed and integrated with other land uses in and around the protected area.
