  • UNIT 1:INTRODUCTION

    This unit covers the nature and goals of semantics and pragmatics within linguistics; semantic foundations: indexes and symbols; compositionally and intentionality principles and levels of meaning.

    • SEMANTICS

      This unit exposes learners to semantic role theory, speech act theory, index theory, lambda notation for functions, conceptual and interpersonal meaning, semantic decomposition, semantic relations involving words and sentences, the language of modern standard logic, kinship terminology and cooperative principle.

      • PRAGMATICS

        The unit focuses on pragmatic and context, types of context, conversational maxims, implicature, pragmatic coordinate system, deixis, modern pragmatics and quantificational determiners.

        • SEMANTICS AND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

          The last unit covers the semantics of children's language, the development of presuppositions and implicatures in children, complexities in differentiating semantics from pragmatics and truth conditions.
